European Champions Spain Lead World Rankings
BERNE (Reuters) - Newly crowned European champions Spain have climbed to the top of the latest world rankings published by world soccer's governing body FIFA on Wednesday. It is the first time since the introduction of the rankings in 1992 that Spain, who were rated fourth last month, have been listed as the world's best team. The ranking system is based on international results over the past four years with more points awarded for wins in major tournaments. Germany, losers of Sunday's Euro 2008 final, climbed two places to third position behind Italy, who rose one spot despite going out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage. Former leaders Argentina saw their nine-month spell at the top of the rankings come to an end, tumbling down to sixth place after a disappointing month that included two draws in World Cup qualifying against Ecuador and Brazil. The 2004 European champions Greece suffered an even bigger drop, from eighth to 18th, after losing...

Xavi: Spain's Euro Win Is Good for Game
MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's victory at Euro 2008 did soccer a favor, UEFA's player of the tournament Xavi has said. Nine of coach Luis Aragones's team were nominated in the squad of the tournament, as selected by European soccer's governing body on Monday, when they were praised for their open, attacking approach and their neat, possession football. But it was the 28-year-old Barcelona midfielder, supplier of the pass for Fernando Torres's winner in the final against Germany, who was singled out for a special mention. "They have rewarded Spain for their style of play and I was the lucky one chosen. They could have given it to any player in our team," Xavi said of his award in an interview with daily El Pais on Wednesday. "Luis (Aragones) deserves the credit for the triumph, for the group he has created over a long period of time. He promoted a particular style and with it we won. "I think it has done football a great favor because it has proved you can win...

Spain Cast Aside Under Achievers Millstone in Style
VIENNA (Reuters) - "Football was the winner" is one of the most over-worn cliches in the game but it happened to be true about Spain's victory in Euro 2008. The connoisseurs will be able to sit back in years to come and simply say that the best team won what was one of the most entertaining and aesthetically pleasing football tournaments of recent times. What made Spain's 1-0 victory over soccer superpower Germany so satisfying was the manner in which it was achieved. A team of highly talented footballers played the game as it was meant to be played -- with the ball at their feet -- and drew on their full repertoire of skills to overcome a series of worthy opponents to take European football's greatest prize. Spain did the game another service in that they finally cast aside the label of perennial underachievers that had dogged them since they won their only other trophy, the European Championship of 1964. "At last justice has been done and the team that...

Field Set for Congressional Without Tiger
BETHESDA, Maryland (Reuters) - Tournament host Tiger Woods will be a conspicuous absentee at this week's AT&T National where South Korean K.J. Choi defends the title he won by three shots last year. World number one Woods had reconstructive surgery on his left knee last Tuesday and has been advised by his doctors to take extra care for the first three weeks of his recovery. "Flying, unfortunately, swells up my leg pretty good," Woods said in a teleconference call on Monday. "When I flew home from the procedure, it ballooned up a little bit. So my doctors advised me to lay low and stay away from planes. "Missing this week being the host of the event, it's very disappointing," added the 14-times major winner, who has shut down his playing schedule for the rest of the year. Five of the world's top 20 are competing this week at Congressional Country Club, led by seventh-ranked American Steve Stricker and holder Choi (10th). Stricker, voted the 2007 PGA Tour...

Fast Track to Success for Woods as PGA Host
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tiger Woods has made a habit of achieving the remarkable as a player but even he was amazed when his first tournament as a host on the PGA Tour was accomplished so quickly. The AT&T National, being played this week for the second time in Bethesda, Maryland, was put together in less than four months after the green light was given for its first edition last year. "What we did in such a short span of time was absolutely remarkable," Woods told Reuters. "It's hard to believe that, with the help of the membership, the PGA Tour, AT&T and all of our staff, we put this tournament together so quickly." The slot on the calendar became available when the International, held outside Denver, came to a premature halt after its 2006 edition due to the absence of Woods from the field and a lack of sponsor. The world number one and his Tiger Woods Foundation sprang into action, paving the way for a $6 million tournament which was staged last July at...

Coughlin and Peirsol Blitz to World Records
OMAHA, Nebraska (Reuters) - Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol blitzed to world records in the 100 meters backstroke to highlight another breathless day of action at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials on Tuesday. Coughlin sparked the record demolition when she stormed to the wall in a time of 58.97 seconds, trimming 0.06 off her own mark to become the first woman to dip under 59 seconds. It was the third time in two days the record had been lowered, with Hayley McGregory and Coughlin swapping the mark in successive preliminary heats on Monday. Even though McGregory briefly held the record, her third- place finish behind Margaret Hoelzer in the final was not good enough to earn a trip to Beijing with only the top two securing Olympic berths. "It just feels so good to be on the team," Coughlin told reporters. "It is such a cruel meet. "I have so many friends I'm cheering for but there are only two spots. "People assume if you're the world record holder that you're...
